Now that some of the hype has died down, let's really talk about it!
As much as I can agree with the fact that Kanye West is a creative genius, we have to talk about the redundancy and unappealing aesthetic of these Yeezy collections. While there are (and have been in previous collections) some really good pieces and looks that I can definitely get behind, I'm starting to grow tired of the "ath-leisure chic looks in muted colors" aesthetic.

First of all, you can say all you want about how the Kardashians may not be your favorite people in the spotlight. However, you cant deny their influence, especially that of Kim Kardashian West's. The woman is literally a social media/ buzz-creating expert. Literally everything she puts out or attaches her name or likeness to becomes a trending topic and skyrockets in garnering media attention. With that in mind, it was a genius decision for Kanye to utilize her as a marketing tool for Yeezy Season 6. This fact is also true when you look at how many Kim look-a-likes there are out there and how many women already possess that look or are chasing said look. I can also appreciated the paparazzi photo shoot concept/style that was used. It establishes another level of cohesion for the guerilla-style presentations that the Yeezy Season collections are known for. I admit, the way that the campaign was presented was pretty genius.

On another note, once you get past the method of the campaign and the influence behind it, you're left with the lackluster clothing that the sixth Yeezy Season collection presents. Season after season, Kanye's new collections seem to be more about the moment and excitement that they create rather than the actual content that the moment is set around--the CLOTHING! This is a bit disheartening, considering the influence that Kanye has had on fashion, men's in particular, and the hypebeast fashion culture in its entirety. This whole "I'm stylish, but I also don't care" or "effortless/ careless chic" aesthetic is definitely the new wave. To be honest, it's cute, but it makes me feel a type of way. I miss when people used to DRESS, put together a LOOK. I want to gag, fawn, be inspired by, clutch my pearls and stare in awe with my mouth wide open at a look that was thoughtfully orchestrated. This current wave leaves me feeling so unmoved.

But to that point, if that's the case, it says a lot more about Kanye's influence and creative genius than anything else. He's literally putting out clothing that looks like commissary chic and haute Hanes or gives me "I'm just gonna throw this on and go around the corner" and "let me throw on heels with my basic outfit to make it cute" vibes. On one hand, it gets on my nerves and it's underwhelming. Then, on the other, it's like Kanye really is a genius to be able to have the mainstream fashion industry eating this up and fawning over these pieces.
I'm not one for taking anyone's shine. If it works, I'm with it! I also am not going to complain about the fact that it's Kanye having all these white people eating out of the palm of his hands and running over each other for this look, so go forth and prosper Mr. West!
