Now that the hype of a new year has officially dwindled, how is everyone doing with those "new year, new me" proclamations?
One thing that I have enjoyed about 2017 so far is the level of optimism and ambition for making this year a great one. The vibe has been really dope, to say the least! Not to mention the #optimismchallenge making its rounds across our timelines is just the breath of fresh air and carefree spirit we all need to keep our heads to the sky!
All of the overall good energy has me focusing on how to make this year my best year yet. For me, the new year is about pursuing everything that makes me happy, doing what I love and seeking inspiration at every turn. I traded empty "new year, new me" proclamations and resolutions a while ago for new goals and chasing happiness. What are you going after this year?
As a creative, I find that it's imperative to always have sources of inspiration all around. Friends, family, role models, places, a dream, words of encouragement. Stories of women that I look up inspire me the most, more specifically, black women excelling in their fields. I love seeing women do amazing things; it gives me a sense of pride. There's definitely something to be said about being able to see people who look like you or started where you started excel, especially in your field of interest. It makes the possibility of success more tangible and gives you that push to make things happen for yourself.
So many women, young and old, inspire me, whether it be through their career endeavors, personalities, ambitions and a host of other factors. However, there is a group of women who I've looked up to and have been on my radar for quite some time.
June Ambrose - I've been in love with this woman for YEARS! She has a huge, fun personality and the impeccable style to match. Designer, author, stylist, TV personality--there's nothing this woman can't do!
Solange Knowles - One of the most creative people on the planet! She has such a unique vision concerning her artistry, and I'm so here for it. I've been a fan of her music, style and overall creativity for a long time. I'm always so excited to see what she's working on. & A Seat at the Table is still on my playlist almost everyday!
Elaine Welteroth - One of my favorite EICs ever! I love what she doing at Teen Vogue, spearheading projects to diversify the magazine beyond the superficiality of fashion and beauty and shedding light on cultural appropriation, social injustices, race, sexuality and just being a voice for young men and women. She's legit my best friend in my head!
Michelle Obama - Honestly, what can I say that will do justice to our beloved former (it still hurts!) First Lady of the United States?! This woman is the epitome of grace, elegance, authenticity, eloquence and ambition. She's had an everlasting impact for people all over the world. She's forever my FLOTUS!
Rihanna - C'mon now! Who doesn't love the Bajan beauty? Her style is ever-changing, which is grounds for constant style inspo. She's gorgeous, extremely talented and has such a carefree, unapologetic spirit about her. She's been making great music (still in love with ANTI, btw), designing some pretty awesome things with Puma x Fenty and just living her life exactly how she wants to! Oh, what a life!
Gabi Gregg - I absolutely love this woman. Her style, her confidence, her advocation for body positivity...it's definitely a breath of fresh air. She was the first plus size fashion and lifestyle blogger I had come across, and she was a major inspiration. She makes it her mission to uplift the plus size community with each endeavor she partakes in. She was my first encounter into becoming confident in the body God gave me.
Kelly Rowland - Singer/ songwriter, author, mother...this woman wears many hats. She has such a beautiful spirit and is excellent operating in her craft. She's easily made her way onto my list of style favorites.
Kahlana Barfield - Another one of my best friends in my head. She's so cool, has one of the most amazing style sense I've seen in a while and is living the dream life. She's a newlywed, a new mother and has my dream career as the beauty editor-at-large at Instyle magazine. She's goals for me!
I have a feeling that this year is going to be one for the books!
